Becky’s Tubal Ligation Reversal Journey Part One
Becky and her husband discuss with Dr. Gary Berger how they came about the decision to have tubal ligation reversal surgery. Becky describes how she went to see another surgeon who told her she was not a good candidate for tubal reversal surgery due to her age (46). Dr. Berger agrees with the couple that all tests look good and that if they do not try she will always be second guessing herself.

Becky’s Tubal Ligation Reversal Journey Part Two
The nurses at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center prep Becky for tubal reversal surgery. Becky is comfortable and ready to proceed with surgery with Dr. Gary Berger. Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is dedicated solely to tubal reversal surgery and has helped women from all over the world to have children after a tubal ligation.

If you are reading this article on this site, then you have probably been looking into tubal ligation reversal as a means of having another child (or maybe to be rid of PTLS). Yes, tubal ligation reversal can give you the opportunity to become pregnant again but there are still some potential risks you should be aware of if you are an older mom-to-be wanting a pregnancy after 40. Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith have provided quite a bit of information on this topic of advanced maternal age pregnancies on their blog at the website http://www.tubal-reversal.net/

The number of women having advanced maternal age pregnancies is on the increase. In fact, a great many women today are classed as having this type of pregnancy because they are over the age of 35. When a woman does have a pregnancy after 40 years of age, she needs to be made aware that there are more risks involved than for a younger woman. Therefore, any woman who would like to have more children after she is 40 years or older will have to take certain factors into consideration first.

The first is that your fertility level will not be as high as a younger woman’s, especially a woman in her 20s. It just won’t be as easy to conceive. However, Dr. Berger did collect statistics on his patients, the only doctor doing so to our knowledge, and he found that 41% of his patients over 40 did conceive. That’s means tubal ligation reversal is better than IVF for women over 40. Check out the statistics yourself.

Another problem in a pregnancy after 40 is the higher chance of the child being born with some kind of genetic problem. The one that is most commonly found in such pregnancies is Down Syndrome. The risk of the baby being born with such a chromosome defect is 1 in 42. There are tests that doctors can use including an amniocentesis test that enables them to determine if the child will have such a genetic problem or not. If found to be true, then there are other decisions which will have to be made which are up to you and your spouse.

Furthermore, there is a risk to the fetus of an abortion being caused by the amniocentesis test. The odds of it happening are 1 in 200. This means a serious discussion with your doctor and husband after you learn the benefits and detriments of having the test.

With a pregnancy after 40, you are also at risk of developing other health problems. There is a greater chance of having preterm labor, of developing diabetes, or suffering from high blood pressure. There is a much greater chance of having a preeclampsia pregnancy. Preeclampsia can lead to eclampsia so you need to learn the symptoms. This can be further exacerbated by an unhealthy lifestyle meaning even a younger pregnant woman with such a lifestyle can suffer these health problems. In order to catch such potential health problems with a pregnancy after 40, you will be monitored more closely during your pregnancy.

Additionally, if you did undergo a tubal ligation reversal or plan to, you should follow your surgeon’s instructions as to what you should do upon finding out you’re pregnant. Many women, after tubal ligation reversal, will know when they become pregnant due to the monitoring they do. Once you are, you should do as the surgeon tells you to make sure it is a viable pregnancy and to catch any problems early. Such instructions can be found at Dr. Berger’s website if the surgeon you are talking to does not make any such instructions available. You might find it better to just schedule your surgery with Dr. Berger or Dr. Monteith.
